Various websites offering discounted rates on a variety of products and services are seen popping up everywhere lately, but one that really stood out for me was: DEALIFY.COM! Not because they offer fantastic discounts but because of their Beards for Beanies Initiative!!!! Now, some may say I am fond of this project because my BF has SOMEWHAT of a BEARD (haha) but no, the thing that attracted me to this idea is the fact that they are making use of their HUGE database for a good Cause. Cape Town is FREEZINGLY Cold this winter – why not keep warm with one kick-ass beanie!?
So, how does it work?
Established in March 2011, the Cape Town based Beardly Bunch aims to raise funds for The GOGO Trust (a registered NGO that supports elderly unemployed people). The GOGO Trust creates job opportunities by teaching them to knit and produce colourful woollen beanies.
Steve Van Aardt, co-founder of The Beardly Bunch, said: “The Beardly Bunch aims to encourage people to grow beards and don beanies through the cold and harsh winter months with proceeds being donated to the homeless. Thanks to Dealify, we’ll be reaching a far bigger audience than usual. The R160 donation (that includes packaging and post) provides for the following:
- It employs and pays an elderly Gogo to knit a pair of Beanies.
- It serves to give a homeless/street child a Beanie for winter.
- Each person receives an identical Beanie to either keep or to give to someone in need.”
Kevin Tucker, General Manager of Dealify said: “By supporting The Beardly Bunch in their charitable bid to keep needy people warm and giving work to the unemployed, we are harnessing the model of the power of collective buying for a great cause. Dealify hopes to achieve the same successful results for The Beardly Bunch as we have for our consumer deals.”
